This place was great!
I was visting Rome for a few days and looked up local places to eat. I loved that this little restaurant was open late too. Upon entering the bar was crowded but they were able to squeeze us into a table. The wine selection is fantastic, the food choices were tasty, and the dessert was great.
I started with Lasagna and Porchetta because they were heavily rated online. I really enjoyed the porchetta, it was exactly what I was anticipating. The Lasagna was cheesy and delicious. Everything was perfectly cooked and savory. I really enjoyed it a lot.
Finally the waiter came around and offered us dessert. Although we were really expecting to have any we ended up having some. The tiramisu was so incredible. The taste was not too sweet but just right. -

In Italy on vacation and we visited the Colosseum today along with some other monuments! It was truly a spectacle, but we get hungry after all the walking and climbing of stairs! So we did what good Yelp'ers do and found a nearby place with a good rating... here we are!
Atmosphere/Appearance: Nestled right in the hustle and bustle of the "downtown-ish" area just north of the Colosseum is this gem. Upon our arrival we were quite confused at how we enter the restaurant. There was a staff member sitting outside on one of the steps and there were these thin double doors right behind him. Only one of them was open and they were thin enough to where someone would have to turn sideways to get into. So were confused and was wondering if the restaurant was even open. We walked around the block, then came back seeing that there was no other way in. Someone inside saw how confused we were trying to get in and they opened the other door allowing us in... but why couldn't the staff member sitting outside on the steps do that? I was rubbed the wrong way early by this place so anyway... once inside the bar area we were greeted and taken to our seats in the dining area. This place has a real tavern feel with lots of decor spread all over the walls and cozy small tables.
Service: Remember the guy sitting on the steps outside? He was our server. Some coincidence. He was fine though. He took care of us, made good recommendations and got us everything that we needed.
Food: I went with an order of meatballs and grilled chili peppers. They were both small portions, but it was actually the best food we've had for our 3 days we've been in Italy.
Value: The prices escape me, but it wasn't that expensive. It wasn't a wallet-breaking experience or anything like that, but the food was certainly worth it.
In conclusion, I'd come back here for sure, especially since I know how to actually get into the restaurant now! -

We wanted to stay close in the neighborhood for our last dinner in Rome. Seeing all the great reviews of Ai Tre Scalini we decided on this spot.
We put our name in with the host a little before 10:30pm on a Friday. I was a bit worried considering the host emphasized there are about 5-6 tables ahead of us. Meh, we figured it shouldn't take too long. After 30 minutes of waiting the host called our names for our table.
The restaurant is tiny!! Most tables were a max of no more of four people. Just a heads up if you're trying to bring more than 4 in your party. Took a bit for our waiter to acknowledge us and when he did he brought us small crackers. These crackers were a life saver. More about that in a minute.
We flagged him down to order a meat and cheese platter for two, the porchetta, lasagna, a bottle of water, and a glass of Syrah. After putting in our order we we're getting hungry. Luckily, we had those crackers cause 45 minutes later that meat and cheese board finally came.
The meat and cheese board was alright. Not my favorite board, but it was decent. I did appreciate the ball of buffalo mozzarella on it. Another 30-40 minutes after we finished the board did our other two dishes arrive.
The porchetta that folks raved about fell flat. It tasted like a regular pork chop with a good cup of salt poured on top of it. I should've known how bad it would be since it was served with a side of
mustard. I didn't think bad porchetta could exist in Rome. I was wrong!! The lasagna on the other hand was pretty good. Flavorful and tasty.
It was already near 1 am by the time I was able to flag down the waiter for our check. Most places we visited in Rome were pretty efficient and quick at getting their food out. Ai Tre was the polar opposite. This place made eating a sit down dinner in Paris look like fast food.
I would skip this place and go somewhere else. Unless you have large amounts of time to kill and no appetite. -

Went back a few weeks ago and extremely disappointed with the quality of food and service! It felt like a tourist trap...the prices were inflated, staff couldn't care less and tasteless food. We won't be going back!!

Very small, loud, sort of hipster vibe place with delicious food, not expensive, and blaring American classic rock. We tried to go the night before based on reviews, but there was a crazy wait and we weren't patient enough. Stumbled across it again on the way home from sightseeing and gave it a go. Boy are we glad we did. Had a glass of delicious Chianti, meatballs, mozzarella with rocket and tomato, and ravioli. The ravioli aren't the pressed pocket kind, but the wrapped and stuffed one. The meatballs stole the show- tender and in a sauce that was one of the best tomato sauces I have ever had. They were seriously amazing. The mozzarella was a perfect Blend of cheesy, salty and savory. So good. Will definitely return, but beware long waits as it's tiny and very popular. Also- FYI the bathrooms are kind of small and gross (at least the ladies room).
